What is dynamic homepoint and when should I use it on my DJI drone?

I saw a dynamic homepoint setting in DJI Fly but I am not sure what it does. Does it change where my drone returns to if I use RTH? I sometimes fly while hiking or from a kayak where I am moving around. Does dynamic homepoint mean the drone will follow me and land where I am rather than where I took off?

Dynamic Homepoint automatically updates the drone's RTH target to the current GPS position of the controller as you move. Without it, the homepoint locks to the coordinates where the drone powered on — if you walk away during the flight, RTH still returns to the original launch spot.

With dynamic homepoint enabled: the homepoint indicator on the DJI Fly map moves with you every few seconds. If RTH triggers (signal loss, low battery, or manual press), the drone flies to wherever you currently are — not your original launch point.

Most useful for: hiking along a trail while filming; kayaking or paddleboarding; filming from a moving vehicle that stops at multiple points; any scenario where you move significantly during the flight and want the drone to come back to your current position rather than where you started.

Requirement: the controller must maintain a reliable GPS signal for dynamic homepoint to update accurately. Phone GPS (RC-N1) updates more slowly; dedicated RC controller GPS is more responsive.

When to enable and when not to: enable when you are actively moving during the flight — hiking, cycling, paddling, or driving between locations. The drone coming back to your current position is almost always better than returning to a point you left 20 minutes ago.

Leave it off when you want the homepoint anchored to a specific safe landing spot — a rooftop shoot, a pier, any location where the original launch point is the only safe place to land. Also leave it off if you will briefly walk across unsafe surfaces (deep water, unstable ground, tight spaces) — you do not want the homepoint to lock to a location you passed through for 3 seconds that is not a safe landing zone. Monitor the homepoint indicator on the map when dynamic homepoint is enabled so you always know where the drone will return to.

Technical detail: the controller's GPS position is transmitted to the drone as part of the regular telemetry data over the OcuSync link. The flight controller receives this position update and uses it to update the RTH homepoint waypoint in real time, typically every 1-3 seconds matching the telemetry refresh rate.

Controller GPS accuracy is typically 3-5m — the same accuracy range as the drone's GPS. Dynamic homepoint is therefore as precise as the standard fixed homepoint; neither is accurate to sub-meter precision. In dense urban environments where GPS multipath error is higher, both controller and aircraft GPS accuracy degrades together, making the homepoint less precise. If you use dynamic homepoint and RTH triggers in an urban canyon, expect the drone to return to within approximately 5m of your position rather than landing directly at your feet.

Professional use case: when driving between multiple shoot locations in a single session, dynamic homepoint means the drone always knows where you currently are. This is particularly useful for multi-stop commercial shoots where you take off at location 1, fly, land, drive to location 2, take off again — dynamic homepoint keeps RTH targeted to your current vehicle position rather than anchored to your first stop of the day.

One caution for driving use cases: if you leave the drone in the air while the vehicle moves (filming a property from a moving car, for example), dynamic homepoint will continuously update to the moving vehicle position. If RTH triggers while the vehicle is moving, the drone will try to land at a GPS position that the vehicle is no longer at by the time the drone descends. For vehicle-in-motion operations, monitor the homepoint update position carefully and be ready to take manual control if RTH triggers unexpectedly.

Common confusion: even without dynamic homepoint, the homepoint updates each time you power on and take off at a new location. The confusion comes from pilots who power down between locations, move, and power on again — the homepoint resets to the new takeoff location. The issue is when you move during a continuous flight session without powering down.

Always check the homepoint icon on the DJI Fly map before every flight and after any takeoff. The map shows the current homepoint with a house icon — tap it to see the exact coordinates. If the icon is shown far from your current position and you want the drone to return to you, either enable dynamic homepoint or power down and take off again at your new location to reset the homepoint to your current GPS position.

Safety consideration that is easy to miss: if you are flying from a boat or kayak with dynamic homepoint tracking the vessel, and you step ashore while the drone is still flying, the homepoint may update to your onshore position — good. But if the boat then drifts away and RTH triggers, the drone attempts to land at the boat's last GPS position even if the boat has moved and the landing zone is now water.

Always confirm where the dynamic homepoint icon is on the map before any situation where RTH might trigger. If the homepoint has moved to an unsafe location (water, under trees, onto a moving vehicle), take manual control rather than letting RTH complete.
