What is D-Log M on DJI drones and should I be using it for my footage?

I see the option for D-Log M in the DJI Fly app and I am not sure if I should switch from Normal color mode. What does D-Log M actually do differently? Do I need special software to use D-Log M footage? My video looks gray and flat when I record in D-Log M — is that normal? When should I use it and when should I stick with Normal mode?

D-Log M (Drone Log Modified) is DJI's flat logarithmic color profile designed to preserve maximum dynamic range by capturing detail in highlights and shadows that Normal mode permanently clips.

What it does: Normal mode applies a baked-in contrast curve that looks good immediately but permanently crushes shadows and blows highlights. D-Log M records a flat, low-contrast curve that spreads tonal information across the full recording range — sky highlights are recoverable data rather than clipped white, shadows are maintained rather than crushed.

Why it looks gray and flat: that is correct and expected. D-Log M footage REQUIRES color grading in post-production. You apply a LUT (Look-Up Table) to convert the flat D-Log M data back to standard Rec. 709 color for delivery. DJI provides a free official D-Log M to Rec. 709 LUT on their website.

When to use it: when you will edit footage; high dynamic range scenes (sunrise, sunset, bright sky with shadowed foreground); when matching footage from multiple cameras. When to skip it: casual footage you will not edit, quick social media clips.

D-Log M requires 10-bit recording for full benefit. On 8-bit, banding risk increases and the dynamic range benefit is reduced. DJI Mini 4 Pro, Air 3, and Mavic 3 all support D-Log M in 10-bit.

How to apply the LUT to D-Log M footage: download DJI's official D-Log M to Rec. 709 LUT from the DJI website (free, linked from the Mini 4 Pro or Air 3 product pages).

In DaVinci Resolve (free): import the LUT via Color > LUTs > Open LUT Folder, then apply it to a node in the color page as your starting point. The LUT is a calibrated starting point, not a final grade — adjust exposure, white balance, and saturation from there.

In Premiere Pro: use the Lumetri Color panel, Basic Correction tab, Input LUT dropdown to apply the D-Log M LUT before any other adjustments.

Expose D-Log M footage slightly brighter than normal (expose to the right — use the histogram to push data toward the right without clipping). A slightly bright D-Log M clip grades better than an underexposed one because shadows contain more detail when you have more exposure latitude to work with.

Color profile comparison for DJI drones:

  • Normal: baked-in contrast and saturation, looks good immediately, no post required, permanently clips highlights/shadows, 8-bit sufficient
  • D-Cinelike: flat profile on older DJI models, easier to grade than D-Log M, less extreme dynamic range preservation
  • D-Log M: maximum dynamic range, requires grading, 10-bit recording strongly recommended, available on Mini 4 Pro and newer models
  • HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma): designed for HDR TV delivery, looks better than D-Log M without grading on HDR displays, good middle ground for HDR platform delivery

10-bit vs 8-bit: 10-bit records 1024 tonal values per channel vs 256 for 8-bit. Log profiles stretch tonal data across those values — 8-bit log footage introduces visible banding in smooth gradients (sky gradients especially). Always record D-Log M in 10-bit mode.

Professional grading workflow with D-Log M: DaVinci Resolve (free version) handles D-Log M grading well and is the industry-standard tool for color work. Workflow: apply DJI's official LUT as a Creative LUT in Resolve for a calibrated starting point, then adjust exposure and white balance on a separate node, then apply your creative look on a third node. Keeping adjustments on separate nodes lets you go back and modify individual stages without affecting the rest of the grade.

For multi-camera productions where drone footage needs to match a cinema camera or mirrorless camera, D-Log M is essentially required. Normal mode footage with its baked contrast curve almost cannot be matched to cinema cameras in post — the tonal curves are fundamentally different. D-Log M gives colorists the raw material they need to match across camera types.

Honest advice: most casual drone users should stay in Normal mode for most shoots. If you are filming travel memories, family events, or quick clips to post directly to social media without editing — D-Log M will just give you flat gray footage that looks worse than Normal unless you invest time in color grading. The quality benefit of D-Log M exists entirely in post-production.

HLG is a genuinely useful middle ground that is underused. It looks better than D-Log M without grading on HDR displays and TVs, and still preserves significantly more highlight detail than Normal mode when shooting sunsets and high-contrast landscapes. If you do minimal color work and primarily shoot outdoors with dramatic lighting, try HLG before committing to the full D-Log M workflow. You might find it gives you 80% of the dynamic range benefit with 10% of the editing effort.

Storage impact is significant: 10-bit D-Log M generates much larger files than Normal 4K footage. A 10-bit H.265 4K D-Log M clip runs approximately 200-400 MB per minute at DJI's standard bitrate. One hour of 10-bit D-Log M footage can fill 30-50GB. If you shoot raw DNG stills during a D-Log M session, add another 25-50MB per frame.

Your SD card needs to sustain the write speed required for 10-bit recording without dropping frames. Not all SD cards are fast enough — slower cards cause recording stops or the camera falls back to a lower bitrate automatically. Verify your card is rated for the sustained write speed your specific drone requires.
