I want a drone that can genuinely navigate around obstacles for follow-me filming and as a general safety feature for beginner flying. Which consumer drones have the best obstacle avoidance systems right now? I have heard about DJI APAS and Skydio — what are the real-world differences?

Still the benchmark for autonomous navigation. 6 4K cameras provide a complete omnidirectional view. Algorithms map the 3D environment in real time and plan paths through obstacles at speed. Can genuinely fly through forests and around buildings without hitting anything. No drone at any consumer price point matches this in purely autonomous obstacle avoidance.

DJI Air 3 (~$1,099)

A critical limitation all pilots should understand: obstacle avoidance systems have speed limits. APAS 5.0 on DJI Mini 4 Pro works in Normal and Cine modes but is disabled in Sport mode. At typical Sport mode speeds (45+ mph), the physics of detecting and maneuvering around an obstacle in time simply does not work with current sensor reaction times. This is not a DJI limitation — it is a fundamental physical constraint. If you are flying fast, obstacle avoidance is not protecting you.
For commercial work where geofencing restrictions are a concern, Autel EVO II Pro v3 has obstacle avoidance without DJI's locked geofencing zones.
