Skydio 2 Plus vs DJI Mini 4 Pro for subject tracking: which is better?
I want to film myself mountain biking and hiking solo. I need a drone that can follow me through trees and on trails autonomously. Which is the better choice for solo subject tracking, the Skydio 2 Plus or DJI Mini 4 Pro?

For your specific use case of mountain biking and hiking through trees, the Skydio 2 Plus is the more capable autonomous flier. It uses six cameras arranged around the entire body to build a real-time 3D map of its environment, letting it thread through gaps between trees and follow you in situations where most drones would simply stop or crash.
The DJI Mini 4 Pro has excellent ActiveTrack 360 that works well in open areas, but its obstacle avoidance is less aggressive. In dense wooded trails it will slow down, stop, or ask you to take manual control more often than the Skydio will.
That said, the DJI Mini 4 Pro has a significantly better camera (1/1.3-inch sensor, 4K 60fps, true 10-bit color) and weighs under 249 grams which keeps it legal in many countries without registration. The Skydio 2 Plus camera is decent but not in the same league for image quality.
So the decision comes down to priority: if autonomous tracking through complex terrain is your primary need, choose the Skydio 2 Plus. If image quality and portability matter more and your trails are reasonably open, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is the stronger all-round choice.

I switched from Skydio 2 to DJI Mini 4 Pro and here is my honest take. Skydio is genuinely magical in forest environments. I have seen footage where it weaves through tight trees while staying locked on a mountain biker, and it is impressive. However, the Skydio ecosystem, app, and accessories are not as polished as DJI's. For most recreational users the DJI Mini 4 Pro will be more satisfying overall.

One practical point: the Skydio 2 Plus beacon accessory is worth mentioning. It significantly improves tracking reliability and range when following subjects across varied terrain. Without the beacon the tracking can lose the subject in cluttered scenes. With DJI's Mini 4 Pro you rely on visual tracking via the app which works well in open spaces.

From a video quality standpoint the DJI Mini 4 Pro wins clearly. 10-bit D-Log M footage, 4K 100fps in some modes, and a much larger sensor. If your final goal is publishable YouTube content with great visuals, the footage difference between the two drones is significant. Tracking performance in open conditions is good enough from DJI for most outdoor activities.

Price is also a factor. The DJI Mini 4 Pro is generally less expensive than the Skydio 2 Plus, especially when you factor in DJI's better Care Refresh crash protection plan. If budget matters, start with the Mini 4 Pro. You may find its tracking is sufficient for your terrain without spending more.
