Is the Potensic ATOM SE a good drone for beginners in 2025?

I am torn between the Potensic ATOM SE at $149 and the DJI Mini 2 SE at $299. The ATOM SE looks impressive on paper for the price and has GPS, QuickShots, and a 4K camera. Is it actually as good as the specs suggest, and is it truly beginner-friendly? What are the real-world limitations compared to DJI?

ATOM SE Specs That Actually Deliver

  • Weight: 245g — no FAA registration required for recreational flying
  • GPS: GPS+GLONASS — fast lock, solid position hold comparable to drones 2x the price
  • Camera: 4K EIS (electronic stabilization), 12MP photos
  • Flight time: 28–31 minutes rated (25–27 real-world)
  • Range: ~2km practical (limited by Potensic GO app)
  • QuickShots: Rocket, Dronie, Circle, Helix, Boomerang — all work reliably
  • Waypoints: Fly a pre-programmed route autonomously

Genuine Limitations vs DJI

  • Camera quality: EIS is noticeably less smooth than DJI's 3-axis gimbal, especially in wind. Slight jello effect at fast speeds.
  • App polish: Potensic GO works but feels less refined than DJI Fly. Map integration is functional but not DJI-level.

Personal 8-month owner review: the GPS stability is the defining characteristic of the ATOM SE experience. For a $150 drone, it holds position remarkably well in calm to moderate conditions. I have used it extensively for hiking content and the point-of-interest orbit mode works particularly well — the drone orbits a summit or landmark autonomously while I enjoy the view rather than flying manually.

Limitations I have lived with: the EIS shows wobble at fast movement, the app crashed twice in 8 months (minor inconvenience), and wind above 15mph gets uncomfortable. For the price, these are acceptable trade-offs. I eventually upgraded to a DJI Air 3 but I genuinely enjoyed every flight on the ATOM SE.

The QuickShots are a real highlight. Within 10 minutes of unboxing and getting GPS lock, I was flying the Dronie (drone flies backward and up revealing the landscape) and the Circle (orbits a point of interest). These modes produce footage that looks like it took professional piloting skill even when you know nothing about flying. For someone new to drones who wants impressive results immediately, QuickShots deliver that satisfaction without needing to master manual flying first.

The 245g weight (under 250g threshold) is more significant than it sounds. Not needing FAA registration for recreational flying means one less thing to worry about when you are still learning the rules and regulations. You can fly it at a park or trail without a registration sticker on the body, which also means less anxiety about flying somewhere new. It is a small practical benefit that adds up across hundreds of casual fly sessions.

Camera quality honest assessment: shooting 4K on the ATOM SE and watching it on an iPhone looks genuinely good in calm conditions. Where it falls behind DJI is: (1) wind — the EIS shows vibration artifacts in any meaningful wind; (2) gimbal smoothness — panning shots have a slight digital smoothing quality vs DJI's mechanical stability; (3) low light — the smaller sensor shows noise earlier as light fades. For daylight, calm-condition flying and sharing on social media, the difference is subtle. For serious photography work or any wind, DJI's mechanical gimbal is a meaningful upgrade.
