Drones have become one of the most impactful tools in search and rescue, primarily because they can cover terrain in minutes that would take ground teams hours. The two most critical capabilities are thermal imaging and wide-area grid search. Thermal cameras detect body heat against cooler backgrounds — a person lying in brush at night is essentially invisible to visual cameras but glows clearly on thermal.
The DJI Mavic 3 Thermal and Matrice 30T are the two most widely deployed SAR thermal drones. For grid search, a single drone flying automated lawnmower patterns at 60-80 meters altitude can systematically search a 1-square-kilometer area in under 30 minutes with overlapping visual footage logged for review.
The limitations are real: flight time (25-35 minutes per battery), wind sensitivity above 30 mph, canopy penetration (thermal can't see through dense forest canopy), and regulatory requirements for night operations (Part 107 with anti-collision lighting or a waiver).
