Is the DJI Mini 3 worth $220 more than the FIMI X8 Mini V2?

I'm stuck between the FIMI X8 Mini V2 at $199-249 and the DJI Mini 3 at $469. Both are sub-249g with dedicated RF transmission — not WiFi. The FIMI claims 9km range and 35-minute flight time, the DJI Mini 3 has 10km OcuSync 3 and 38-min standard / 51-min Plus battery. That's a $220 price difference. Is the DJI Mini 3 actually that much better for the extra money?

The DJI Mini 3 is worth the $220 premium for most content creators. The biggest gap is camera quality: the DJI Mini 3 has a 1/1.3-inch sensor vs the FIMI's smaller sensor — meaningfully better dynamic range, low-light performance, and image quality. The DJI Mini 3 also has True Vertical Shooting (rotates the gimbal 90 degrees for native portrait video) — a major feature for Instagram Reels and TikTok that FIMI cannot match. DJI's OcuSync 3 is more reliable than FIMI's link in interference-heavy environments. DJI Fly is more polished than FIMI Navi, with more features and regular updates.

Where FIMI wins: it's $220 cheaper, which is real money. The FIMI is capable and the RF transmission is a genuine advantage over WiFi budget drones. For buyers for whom the price gap is significant, FIMI is a respectable choice. For content creators who care about footage quality and vertical social media, DJI Mini 3's larger sensor and True Vertical Shooting justify the premium clearly.

True Vertical Shooting is the single most differentiating feature for social media creators. The DJI Mini 3 rotates its gimbal 90 degrees to shoot natively in 9:16 portrait orientation for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts. FIMI cannot do this — you'd need to crop horizontal footage to vertical, losing 60%+ of image quality in the process.

If any of your content ends up on vertical platforms, True Vertical Shooting alone may justify the $220 DJI premium. For a horizontal-only YouTube channel, this feature doesn't matter and the FIMI saves you real money that you could put toward extra batteries or accessories.

Flight time comparison: the FIMI X8 Mini V2 gets 28-30 minutes real-world. DJI Mini 3 gets 34-38 minutes with standard battery and up to 47-51 minutes with the Plus battery (sold separately at ~$55-69). DJI wins on flight time at both standard and extended battery.

Over a full day of shooting, the longer DJI flight time means fewer battery swaps and more time in the air. If maximum session time is a priority, DJI Mini 3 with a Plus battery is clearly the better-equipped tool. The FIMI's 28-30 minute real-world time is still good — just not as competitive as FIMI's 35-minute spec implies when you compare it against DJI's actual numbers.

Who should choose FIMI: buyers for whom the $220 difference is genuinely significant financially, buyers who fly primarily in open landscapes where True Vertical Shooting doesn't matter, and buyers who want dedicated RF transmission without entering the DJI ecosystem. The FIMI X8 Mini V2 is a capable drone — RF transmission at this price is a real advantage over every WiFi-based budget drone.

It's just that the DJI Mini 3 is better on most meaningful metrics for content creators, and the $220 buys real, visible improvements. The FIMI wins the value-per-dollar argument; DJI wins the capability-per-dollar argument. Know which metric matters more to your situation.

App and ecosystem comparison: DJI Fly is a mature, well-supported app with excellent tutorials, automated QuickShot modes, and regular feature updates. The DJI ecosystem means excellent global repair support, large community, and accessory availability. FIMI Navi works but is updated infrequently and lacks DJI Fly's depth of intelligent flight modes and polish.

For a first drone you want to grow with over 2-3 years, DJI's ecosystem provides more runway — features added via firmware, more community resources to learn from, and more reliable long-term support. FIMI is more of a "buy it, fly it, replace it" product than a platform you invest in over time.

Final verdict by use case: if you post vertical social media content or need footage quality for professional or semi-professional use, DJI Mini 3 at $469 is worth the extra $220 — sensor size and True Vertical Shooting are real, visible differences in final output. If you want the best possible drone under $250 with dedicated RF transmission, the FIMI X8 Mini V2 is the answer — it outclasses every WiFi-only drone in that price range by a significant margin.
