Is DJI Care Refresh worth buying?

I am buying a DJI Mini 4 Pro and the checkout page is prompting me to add DJI Care Refresh. The one-year plan is $79 and the two-year plan is $119. I am a beginner and not sure if I need this or if it is just a money grab. What do experienced pilots recommend?

DJI Care Refresh is worth buying for beginners. The one-year plan for the Mini 4 Pro costs around $79 and covers up to two flyaway or crash replacements per year at a fraction of the out-of-pocket repair cost. A single gimbal repair through DJI costs $150 to $300 depending on damage. One incident in your first year and the plan has paid for itself with money to spare.

For beginners specifically, this is a better deal than for experienced pilots. Beginners statistically crash more often during the learning phase, fly in unfamiliar environments where risk is higher, and are less experienced at reading wind conditions and airspace. The $79 is not expensive insurance for a $759 drone during your most vulnerable period as a pilot. Even if you fly the entire year without incident, the peace of mind lets you learn without the anxiety of knowing a single mistake could cost hundreds in repairs.

The math is straightforward. Care Refresh for the Mini 4 Pro is around $79 for one year with two covered replacements. A gimbal replacement without coverage is $150 to $200. A crash that damages the camera arm is $100 to $150 in parts plus labor. One incident in your first year makes the plan break even immediately. Two incidents in a year and you are $200 to $300 ahead.

I skipped Care Refresh on my first drone to save $79 and paid $180 for a gimbal repair four months later. I have bought it on every drone since. The math consistently favors buying it for anyone who flies regularly, flies in complex environments, or is in their first year of flying where mistake frequency is naturally higher.

Important details about how Care Refresh actually works. Coverage includes crash damage, flyaways, and water damage. It does not cover theft or intentional damage. When you use it, you ship your damaged drone to DJI and receive a refurbished replacement unit, not necessarily your original drone. Turnaround time is typically one to two weeks. DJI covers shipping costs in both directions.

The replacement is a refurbished drone of the same model, which is fully functional but may show minor cosmetic signs of prior use. This is fine for most people, but worth knowing before assuming you get a brand-new unit back. The plan renews annually and you can choose not to renew once you feel confident your crash risk is low enough to self-insure.

For experienced pilots with a multi-year track record of safe flying, Care Refresh becomes less compelling. If you have flown for two or more years without a serious incident, you can reasonably self-insure by setting aside $200 as a repair emergency fund. That money earns interest, stays in your pocket if nothing goes wrong, and covers most common repairs if something does.

This calculation only works if you honestly assess your risk. If you fly FPV, push the drone into tight spaces, fly in challenging weather, or are a newer pilot, self-insuring is a riskier strategy. Care Refresh is priced reasonably for what it covers and is not a money grab. It is a fair product at a fair price for the right customers, which includes most beginners.

Practical tip: buy Care Refresh at the time of your drone purchase, not later. DJI limits activation to a short window after initial purchase, typically 48 hours for new drones purchased directly. After that window closes, you cannot add Care Refresh regardless of willingness to pay. Do not skip it at checkout planning to add it in a few days because you almost certainly cannot.

If you are genuinely undecided, buy it at checkout. DJI offers a return period during which you can cancel and get a refund if you decide you do not want it. It is much easier to cancel a plan you do not need than to add one you want after the activation window has passed. When in doubt, buy it now and think about it later.
