What is the difference between brushless and brushed drone motors?

I keep seeing drones listed as having brushless motors and others with brushed motors. Budget drones seem to mostly have brushed, while the nicer drones are all brushless. What does this actually mean in terms of performance, durability, and flight? Is brushless always better and does it matter for a beginner who is just learning to fly?

Brushless Motors

Personal experience with both: the degradation of brushed motors is something you notice gradually. My first drone had brushed motors and felt great for the first 30 flights. By flight 60, it was noticeably wobblier and one motor started making a grinding sound. Replaced it with a brushless Potensic ATOM SE and the difference was immediately obvious — much more stable hover, better wind resistance, quieter operation.

The lifespan argument alone justifies paying more for brushless. You are not paying extra for a luxury — you are paying for a functional motor design that simply lasts longer.
