What are the best ND filters for drones and which strengths do I actually need?

I just got a DJI Mini 4 Pro and I keep seeing ND filters recommended for better video. There are so many options — ND4, ND8, ND16, ND64, polarizing filters, different brands at very different prices. Which ND filter set is actually worth buying for a DJI Mini 4 Pro, and what strengths do I need for different lighting conditions? Are the cheaper third-party options as good as the official DJI filters?

ND filters are one of the most impactful accessories for drone video, and the Mini 4 Pro benefits from them significantly. The goal is the 180-degree shutter rule: set your shutter speed to double your frame rate (24fps needs 1/50s, 30fps needs 1/60s). In bright daylight without ND filters you are forced to use 1/1000s or faster to avoid overexposure, which kills motion blur and makes footage look sharp and jittery rather than cinematic. ND filters reduce incoming light so you can use the correct slower shutter speed in bright conditions.

For the Mini 4 Pro, a 4-filter set covering ND4, ND8, ND16, and ND64 handles the full range of conditions: ND4 for overcast, ND8 for partly cloudy, ND16 for bright overcast or golden hour, ND64 for full midday sun. The official DJI ND filter sets fit precisely and are well-made, but Freewell and Polar Pro third-party options are optically equal and often $20-40 cheaper. Avoid no-brand sets — color fringing and optical distortion are real problems at that price tier.

Freewell ND filter sets are the best value option for most DJI drones in 2024. Freewell makes model-specific sets for the Mini 4 Pro, Mini 3 Pro, Air 3, and Mavic 3 series at roughly $60-80 for a 4-filter pack. The optical quality matches or closely approaches DJI's first-party filters at a lower price point.

Freewell also offers a Magnetic Snap system that allows faster filter changes in the field without tools — useful if you are shooting in changing light and need to swap between ND16 and ND64 quickly as the sun moves. For most pilots starting out with ND filters, Freewell is the first recommendation before spending more on Polar Pro or official DJI sets.

Polar Pro Cinema Series is the premium option for pilots who want the highest optical quality without price concern. The cinema-grade glass and coatings minimize color cast and edge distortion at a level that is noticeable when shooting with larger sensor drones like the Mavic 3 series. At $120-150+ per set, the premium is real.

For the Mini 4 Pro and Mini 3 Pro, however, the optical difference between Freewell and Polar Pro is less visible in final output — the smaller sensor is the limiting factor before filter quality becomes the bottleneck. Polar Pro is the right choice for Mavic 3 Classic or Mavic 3 Pro pilots who are working at maximum image quality. For Mini series drones, Freewell delivers equivalent practical results at a better price.

Filter strength by shooting conditions: ND4 for heavily overcast days (2 stops reduction), ND8 for partly cloudy or open shade (3 stops), ND16 for bright overcast or late afternoon golden hour (4 stops), ND64 for full midday sun (6 stops). If you shoot in a single lighting condition most of the time, buy just that filter strength rather than a full set and upgrade later.

Most pilots who shoot outdoors in varied light find the ND8 and ND64 the most used filters, with ND16 as the most versatile across changing conditions. ND4 is the least commonly needed unless you specifically shoot in low light or deep shade. If budget-limited, start with just ND16 and ND64 — those two cover the majority of outdoor shooting scenarios.

Polarizing filters (CPL) are a different tool than ND filters and serve a different purpose. A CPL reduces glare from water, glass, and reflective surfaces and increases color saturation and contrast. For drone photography over lakes, coastal areas, or urban environments with glass buildings, a CPL produces noticeably more vivid and contrasty imagery than an ND filter at the same exposure.

Many filter sets include ND-PL (combined ND and polarizing) options that combine both effects in a single filter. The limitation of CPL on drones is that polarizing effect works best at roughly 90 degrees to the sun, which requires positioning the drone in a specific orientation — not always possible when composing a shot. For travel shooting over water, a CPL or ND-PL set is worth including in your filter kit.

One critical point: buy model-specific ND filters designed for your exact drone. The DJI Mini 4 Pro, Mini 3 Pro, and Mini 3 use different filter mount sizes and are not interchangeable — Mini 4 Pro filters do not fit a Mini 3 Pro. Most reputable brands (Freewell, Polar Pro, DJI official) list exact drone compatibility clearly on their product pages.

Cheap universal filter kits that claim compatibility with multiple drone models typically require adapters that introduce vibration, alignment errors, or vignetting visible in footage. They are not recommended. Always verify the filter is made specifically for your drone model before purchasing.
