I want to shoot aerial photos and video of city skylines at night and at dusk. What drones handle low light well? I know larger sensors are better for low light but I am not sure which drones are actually worth using after dark.
The best drone for night photography under $1,000 is the DJI Mini 3 Pro, and the best under $2,000 is the DJI Air 3.
For night work specifically, the Mini 3 Pro's 1/1.3-inch sensor with an f/1.7 aperture is particularly well-suited — that aperture is wider than the f/2.8 on most other DJI drones, collecting significantly more light at night without pushing ISO high. The Mini 3 Pro at ISO 800 in a city skyline scene produces cleaner images than competing drones at ISO 1600.

Night drone photography is harder than night ground photography for one key reason: you cannot use a tripod. Long exposures at ground level can use 5-30 second shutter speeds. A drone has to hover — and even the most stable hover introduces micro-movement from position correction.
The practical minimum shutter speed for sharp drone night shots is around 1/15s to 1/25s. Below that, gimbal-compensated movement still allows blur. This means you need a drone with a wide enough aperture and good enough high-ISO performance to expose correctly at those speeds.
The DJI Mini 3 Pro's f/1.7 aperture is a real advantage — it lets in 2-3x more light than an f/2.8 drone at the same shutter speed, which translates directly to 1-1.5 stops lower ISO and visibly cleaner images.
Night drone photography settings: use RAW capture so you can apply aggressive noise reduction in post without permanently destroying the image. In Lightroom, set noise reduction luminance to 40-70 for ISO 800-1600 night shots from the Mini 3 Pro.
The DJI Mini 3 Pro's Night Mode in DJI Fly (automatic multi-frame stacking) actually produces excellent results without needing post-processing — it takes 5-8 frames automatically and stacks them for dramatically reduced noise. For city skylines, the combined city lights and dark sky create a high-contrast scene that RAW handles much better than JPEG.
Use Night Mode for convenience when you need quick results; use manual RAW when you have time to process for maximum quality.
Blue hour (15-30 minutes after sunset) often produces better aerial photos than true night. The sky retains color and detail that completely disappears in true dark, city lights are fully illuminated, and lower ambient light reduces harsh contrast.
Blue hour aerial shots are technically easier (brighter scene = less noise) and often more visually interesting than true night shots. Plan your drone session to be in the air 10 minutes before sunset to catch the full progression from golden hour through blue hour to full dark.
A single battery session can capture multiple distinct light conditions, giving you a range of image types rather than committing to a single look from true night conditions alone.
FAA Part 107 night waiver is no longer required as of April 2021 — night flying under Part 107 is now allowed as long as the drone has anti-collision lighting visible for 3 statute miles. The DJI Mini 3 Pro has built-in navigation lights.
For recreational hobbyist flyers under TRUST certification, anti-collision lights are also required for night operations. Note: local parks, state parks, and many restricted areas still prohibit night drone operations regardless of FAA rules.
Always check B4UFLY and local park rules before flying after dark. The FAA rule change removed the federal waiver requirement, but local rules remain in effect and vary significantly by city and state.
For night video, the challenges are amplified. Video requires 1/50s shutter speed (180-degree rule at 24fps), which is much faster than the 1/15-1/25s you can use for stills. At 1/50s in low light, you need ISO 1600-3200 — and that noise level in video is very visible.
For night video, the DJI Air 3 and Mavic 3 Pro produce significantly better results than the Mini 3 Pro because their lower base noise floors handle ISO 3200 better. The Air 3 at ISO 3200 for night video is acceptable; the Mini 3 Pro at the same ISO is noticeably more grainy.
