What is the best drone app for beginners?

I just got my first GPS drone and I am using the app it came with. But I have been reading that I should also have an airspace app before flying. What apps do beginners actually need? Is the manufacturer app enough, or are there better options?

Every beginner needs exactly two app categories: a drone control app (brand-specific) and an airspace check app (B4UFLY).

DJI Fly — the benchmark

If you have a DJI drone, DJI Fly is genuinely excellent. It includes:

  • Real-time airspace maps with color-coded zones
  • FlightHub integration for airspace authorization
  • Interactive QuickShot setup (Dronie, Helix, Rocket, Orbit, Boomerang)
  • Video editor built in
  • Tutorial system for new pilots
  • Clean telemetry display — altitude, speed, distance, battery, GPS status

FAA B4UFLY — non-negotiable for all pilots

B4UFLY is the FAA's official airspace awareness app. Open it at your flying location before every flight. It shows a simple green (likely OK) / yellow (check rules) / red (do not fly here) status plus details on what airspace restrictions apply. It is free on iOS and Android. No excuses for not checking airspace — the app takes 10 seconds to consult.

B4UFLY deserves extra emphasis: it is a legal requirement in practice, not just a nice-to-have. If you fly in restricted airspace and get caught, "I did not know" is not a defense. B4UFLY takes 10 seconds to check before any flight and its green/yellow/red indicator makes the answer instantly clear for beginners without needing to interpret airspace charts.

What B4UFLY shows you at your GPS location:

  • Airspace class (A, B, C, D, E, G) and relevant rules
  • Proximity to airports with distance
  • Active TFRs (Temporary Flight Restrictions) — presidential movements, sporting events, emergency operations
  • National park boundaries where drone use is restricted
  • LAANC authorization availability (automatic airspace approval for certain controlled airspace zones)

I check B4UFLY before every single flight — even at my regular flying spots, because TFRs appear without much notice.

Honest comparison of what you actually get with each brand's app:

DJI Fly (DJI drones): The best drone app period. Airspace maps, intelligent flight modes, video editing, tutorials, stable connection. If you use a DJI drone, you have essentially no app complaints.

Holy Stone Go (Holy Stone drones): Handles basic flight control, returns telemetry, gives access to headless mode and some intelligent modes. The interface is functional but not polished. Connection can be finicky on older phones. No integrated airspace maps — use B4UFLY separately.

Potensic Pro (Potensic drones): Similar to Holy Stone Go in quality and features. Adequate for basic control. The ATOM SE's intelligent modes (QuickShot equivalent) are accessed through this app. No airspace integration.

The app quality gap between DJI and budget brands is real and significant. It is one of the overlooked reasons the DJI Mini 2 SE at $300 delivers a better overall experience than $200 alternatives despite the seemingly smaller spec difference.

Phone setup tips for better drone app performance:

  • Close background apps: Drone apps benefit from maximum available RAM. Close everything else before opening the control app.
  • Disable battery saver mode: Battery saver throttles the CPU, which causes connection lag. Turn it off before drone flying sessions.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi: When your drone uses a dedicated 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz controller link (not phone Wi-Fi), having phone Wi-Fi on can cause interference or distract the controller connection. Turn it off during flight.
  • Airplane mode + Bluetooth off: For DJI drones that connect via USB cable, airplane mode with just Bluetooth off is sometimes the most stable connection method on some Android phones.
  • Screen brightness: Set to maximum outdoors — drone screens are almost impossible to read at default brightness in bright sunlight.

App update cadence matters. DJI Fly receives regular updates tied to firmware releases — always update both together to avoid version mismatch issues that can cause app disconnections or lost features. Holy Stone and Potensic apps are updated less frequently. Check for updates in the App Store before any flying session after a period of not flying.

One more app beginners often overlook: the FAA's DroneZone website (not an app, but a web tool) at faadronezone.faa.gov is where you register your drone if it weighs 250g or more. The $5 registration fee and number must be physically marked on the drone. It is not an app but it is part of the legal requirement picture.
